The PMWC 2022 AI and Data Sciences Track on January 26-28 at the Santa Clara Convention Center is an outstanding opportunity for all who work with large data sets to learn first-hand from leaders in the field about recent data and technology developments and how the various advancements will expedite both improved healthcare solutions and business outcomes.

New technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have huge potential to elevate our understanding of data by creating insights that allow us to accurately diagnose and treat patients. The acquired knowledge can help us uncover associations between a person’s genetic makeup and their health and biomarkers associated with a disease, as well as fine-tune patient selection for clinical trials, and reduce costs, all while accelerating drug discovery and vaccine development.
Artificial intelligence tools are powerful data extractors that advance model development and process large amounts of unstructured data. Clearly, precision medicine can hugely benefit from AI innovations by empowering decision-makers at the patient level. AI is expected to also play a huge role in resource planning and operational efficiency for best patient care.

The expectations we have for these technologies:
1. Acceleration of knowledge extraction: The algorithms are fairly tolerant when it comes to missing data or inaccurate data – a characteristic that allows them to largely overcome the problem of dirty data in the context of analysis of large data sets from a variety of sources. Errors and dirty data are typical of all real-world data sets so having the ability to overcome this challenge greatly increases our benefit from the collected information. It is of course critical that the data is as clean as possible from the start.
2. Access to the raw/clinical data: We have access to many kinds of data, but there are many valuable additional data that are either not noted in clinical systems or are hidden in narrative text somewhere in the record. We could answer many more questions if we had more complete structured and coded data from source systems. We need higher consistency in data representation and data collection, which overall allow faster learning. We expect new technologies to address this component more efficiently in the near future.

PMWC 2022 Silicon Valley Track 2 AI and Data Sciences (3-day) is kicked off by Russ Cucina M.D., Chief Health Information Officer and VP, Genetic and Genomic Services at UCSF Health.
