PGx Requires Continuous Development of Clinical Strategies, more from Mary Relling of St. Jude, Track Chair on January 27, 2023

“Clinical implementation of pharmacogenetic testing is no longer held back primarily by a lack of evidence supporting its use but remains relatively rare for practical reasons. In the next 3 years, implementation can be facilitated by continued development of clinical guidelines and informatics tools that can work across platforms, increased uptake by professional societies, continued improvements in reimbursement, increased use of panel-based rather than single-gene tests, and more prevalent demand from consumers.”
Dr. Mary Relling, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital & PGx Track Chair at PMWC 2023 Silicon Valley January 25-27 (View the Program)

At present, pharmacogenomics (PGx) is among the most actionable elements of precision medicine with actual benefits to patients and providers including improved outcomes and reduced total health care costs. Yet, the challenges are still numerous, several of which will be discussed in the PGx track.

While there are many known factors that impact response to medications besides genetic factors (e.g., other medications, age, sex, smoking/alcohol, food interactions), for 15%-20% of medications, PGx testing can guide prescribing to reduce adverse effects and improve the chance of effectiveness.

This important and pertinent precision medicine topic includes the following talks in our specifically designated track on PGx chaired by Dr. Mary Relling with thought leaders in the field:
Policy Efforts to Address Barriers of PGx Adoption – chaired by Kristine Ashcraft (Invitae) with Pam Traxel (ACS CAN).
Laboratory Testing and Reports – chaired by Stuart Scott (Stanford University), with Kristy Crooks (University of Colorado) and Ann M. Moyer (Mayo Clinic).
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Pharmacogenomics Implementation –with Carlos Bustamante (Galatea Bio).
PGx Practice Liability – Dan Hertz (University of Michigan), Anthony Morreale, (VA, San Diego), Karen Merritt (Patient Advocate).
From Economics to Reimbursement – chaired by Sara Rogers (Mayo Clinic) with Gabriel Bien-Willner (Palmetto GBA), Stirling Bryan (UBC), Ray Stultz (Optum Rx), and Kathryn Phillips (UCSF).
Implementation of PGx at UCSF – Bani Tamraz, UCSF.
PMWC 2023 Honorees – Kelly E. Caudle, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Luminary Award), Dan Roden, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Pioneer Award).

Please join this most relevant track at PMWC 2023 SV – January 25-27, 2023 – where PGx key opinion leaders come together with an agenda to advance PGx testing towards becoming a routine clinical practice.
