Accelerators play a vital role in biomedical and digital health startups, providing advice, direction, resources, industry connections and funding required to start bringing their product visions to market. This Showcase will feature leading academic initiatives that train aspiring medical technology innovators and commercial accelerators that help scientists create radically innovative companies, as well as selected successful startups.

General Partner, SOSV, Founder, IndieBio

Biography
Arvind founded IndieBio, the world’s largest biotech program based seed fund. Using a blend of scientific method and design thinking Arvind and the IndieBio team funds startups that can impact over a billion people or address markets over a billion dollars. Beginning his professional life as an options market maker in the Pacific Coast Exchange in the Microsoft pit, Arvind left trading in search of a career with deeper meaning. Arvind set out and discovered design when IDEO hired him. As a design director of product development and strategy at IDEO, he led the team that designed the Samsung Galaxy Curve, amassed 8 patents, received many international design awards and moved to Shanghai to build the Asia product design team. Further, Arvind co-founded Starters, a personal fitness app that gained thousands of users in 98 countries. Joining SOSV in 2013, Arvind became a venture capitalist to invest in biotech and deep science technologies including AR/VR and new user interfaces. He is a regular speaker at TEDx, TechCrunch Disrupt, Slush conference, Startup Iceland and SFMOMA among others. His writing appears in Nature, Rotman, Forbes and Design Observer. He has been awarded 8 US Patents and has had his work in the SF Museum of Modern Art. Arvind received his B.S. in Genetic Engineering from UCSB and studied Industrial Design at SFSU. Arvind is married with two daughters. He is 2016 world champion in No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has climbed El Capitan and other big walls, was a BASE Jumper and big wave surfer. He is currently trains MMA and BJJ.

Executive Director, CNY Biotech Accelerator

Biography
Kathi manages client interaction, facility operations, policy development, supportive programming and advancement of collaborative partnerships such as the Kingston Syracuse Pathway (KSP). KSP is a cross-border group working to solidify research collaboration and business growth opportunities. Kathi created the Medical Device Innovation Challenge, an intensive mentorship, and resource-rich program which has graduated 16 early-stage startup teams since the program was initiated in 2017. Kathi serves as a Board Member for both MedTech, a non-profit trade organization, and the Business Incubator Association of New York State and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor. Kathi is the Medical Device Annual Conference Chair and GCP Certification Instructor for the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA). She also serves on the Human Factors Engineering Committee and Clinical Investigations Working Group for the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). Most importantly, Kathi has 3 daughters and 6 very active grandchildren.

Central New York Biotech Accelerator (CNYBAC) is located in an Opportunity Zone. CNYBAC staff promote programs, manage wet lab licensing, coordinate access to Upstate Medical University expertise and CORE Facilities, and match resources to biotech innovators within a collaborative ecosystem.

Ph.D, Incubator Manager, QB3

Biography
Gino assists startups with placement into the QB3 incubator network and beyond. He also oversees the day-to-day operations at the QB3 Garage@UCSF and coordinates the development of new incubator spaces. He has more than 15 years experience working at established life science companies and providing strategic and funding advice to startup companies. Gino earned his PhD in physics from UC Berkeley.

M.D., Founder & Director, Byers Center for Biodesign, Stanford University

Biography
Paul Yock is the Martha Meier Weiland Professor of Medicine and founding co-chair of Stanford’s Department of Bioengineering. He is also founder and director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. Dr Yock is internationally known for his work in inventing, developing, and testing new devices, including the Rapid Exchange ™ stenting and balloon angioplasty system, which is now the primary system in use worldwide. He also invented the fundamental approach to intravascular ultrasound imaging and founded Cardiovascular Imaging Systems (CVIS), later acquired by Boston Scientific. Recent awards include the Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT) Career Achievement Award, the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Scientist Award, and two of the top three awards from the National Academy of Engineering: the 2018 Gordon Prize for Technology Education and the 2019 Russ Prize for outstanding bioengineering achievement.

We are now exploring a major revision of this process, given new dynamics created by the focus on value, evolving digital health capabilities and the potential for care outside of the hospital.

M.D., Professor of Chemical and Systems Biology; Co-director of the SPARK Program, Stanford SPARK

Biography
Kevin Grimes is Professor of Chemical and Systems Biology and Co-director of the SPARK Program at the Stanford University School of Medicine. After serving on the clinical faculty, he received a Hartford Foundation Fellowship to study health economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He was subsequently selected as a White House Fellow and served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. After fifteen years in the life science industry, Grimes returned to Stanford to co-direct SPARK. SPARK’s three-fold mission is to advance promising research discoveries into the clinic as new therapeutics and diagnostics; to educate faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students regarding the translational process; and to identify and promote more efficient approaches to translational research. Over 50% of projects completing SPARK have been licensed and/or advanced to clinical trials. The SPARK methodology has been adopted by over 60 academic institutions throughout the world.

Ph.D., Sr. Director Portfolio Sourcing & Management, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS

Biography
Kara is responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing all pipeline activities for sourcing, selection, screening, onboarding, optimizing and tracking the portfolio across JLABS globally. Kara joined the JLABS team in 2012, shortly after the flagship JLABS site opened at Janssen R&D in San Diego. In her previous role, Kara executed on external engagement, sourcing innovation, portfolio management, operational excellence, educational programming, and P&L for the JLABS in San Diego site. Kara also serves as an Instructor for the I-Corps at NIH program, a program aimed at commercializing biomedical technologies, where she serves as Domain Expert in Therapeutics for NIH SBIR recipient companies. Kara came to JLABS from Galapagos NV in Belgium, where she had various roles of increasing responsibility, including business development, marketing, investor relations and medical communications at a time when the company grew from 60 to more than 800 employees and completed its initial public offering on Euronext. Kara holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin.

Biography
Doug’s goal is to help entrepreneurial scientists create successful startups. He founded and manages MBC BioLabs, which has transformed the time and cost required to build a life-science company. By renting space as small as a single bench in fully equipped labs, MBC BioLabs allows companies to generate data on day one, not year one. This winning model has helped entrepreneurs launch and grow 167 companies – and these companies have gone on to raise over $4B! MBC BioLabs has labs in San Francisco and San Carlos and in March a third site will be added – a brand new 30,000 sf building in San Carlos. In addition to great facilities, MBC BioLabs has a lively environment with seminars, social events, partnerships that include JLabs, AbbVie, Celgene, Nitto, Amgen, and a built-in VC, Mission Bay Capital, for which Doug is the Managing Director.
