Biography
Diane Havlir galvanized her team to respond to the COVID-19 epidemic, conducting work in the Mission district of San Francisco at the onset of local outbreaks. She leads a division within UCSF-ZSFG that is home to the first AIDS clinic, “Ward 86,” as well as the SEARCH international multi-sector collaboration—a study of 300,000+ persons in Africa aimed at ending AIDS through a multi-disease approach. When the AIDS epidemic emerged in the 1980s, Havlir was a resident physician at UCSF and has cared for HIV patients, conducted research and participated in transforming policy and guidelines ever since. She is a co-founder and continues to serve as co-chair of San Francisco Getting to Zero, a citywide consortium with a goal to eliminate new HIV infections and deaths. Havlir remains active globally via leadership roles in WHO HIV global guideline groups and the United Nations AIDS Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee.
